Twilight had come and gone, heralding the night's descent upon Slateport City. Zev strolled through the streets of the Night Market, his hands in his pockets, his shiny Lycanroc padding obediently at his side as they wove through the crowds. A myriad of smells and sounds assaulted them from all sides: sizzling meats, sugary desserts, pedestrians chatting and eating, vendors selling everything from handmade kitchenware to tourist knicknacks. The heart of the Lower District, the Night Market had everything to offer a hungry, curious, or bored passerby.[break][break]

But the streets of the city were also crawling with wild Pokémon, many of them drawn from nooks and crannies to snatch morsels of food, cause minor power outages as they siphoned electricity from machines, or play with scampering children. And that was the purpose for Zev's walk that night.[break][break]

Still, that did not prevent him from enjoying what the rest of the Night Market had to offer. He stopped by a dumpling stand and purchased two medium-sized bao stuffed with minced Miltank meat. One of these he fed to Luna before taking a bite of the second one.[break][break]

Glancing around, he saw an unexpected sight: none other than Martín del Mar, mingling with the commoners of the Lower District. Zev approached the other man with a friendly smile, recognition in his eyes.[break][break]

After all, Mars occasionally did visit Howling at the Moon as a regular patron, not just as a high-ranking member of Team Rocket.[break][break]

"Enjoying your evening, Mr. del Mar?" Zev asked, already wielding the metaphorical mask he wore when out in public.

As if it were a matter of fate, Mars’ last appointment of the day had been at one of POG Bank’s branches in the lower district. They had been working on remodelling the building recently, and he had been meaning to come have a look at how it all had turned out. It was all as expected.

What he had not expected had been to run into Zev Harcourt… again. Hadn’t they had a similar encounter around here recently? Completely different circumstances, but still.

”Ah, Harcourt, we really need to stop meeting like this.” His tone is teasing, as is the smile upon his lips. The elegant Persian by his side chuffs a greeting, its crimson gaze fixing on both Zev and his Lycanroc alike. It’s considerably larger than what’s usual for its species.

Zev turned his smile upon Mars' Persian for a brief moment, while Luna stepped toward the large cat and sniffed at him curiously. "I'm doing as well as one can in times like these," the bar owner replied. "Business is booming, since I'm sure you can imagine plenty of people are drinking their days away."[break][break]

The laugh he gave was dark, cynical.[break][break]

"How about you? What brings you down here to our streets?" Zev asked, though a quick glance down the road reminded him that a POG Bank branch was located nearby.[break][break]

Abruptly, Luna turned away from the Persian, her ears perked up with alertness. Without waiting for her master's command, she lunged at a wild Lairon that trundled into view from between two stalls. A quick CRUNCH subdued the Pokémon, allowing Zev to throw a Poké Ball to capture her.

Mars doesn’t really need to imagine, considering it had been recently that even he had gotten truly and properly drunk for the first time in years. Intoxication in the presence of strangers, though? Mars is way too distrusting for that these days.

Guess there’s always a silver lining to times like these, huh?” He smirks, because while most people would probably be appalled when hearing about how businesses have profited from chaos and dismay, to Mars that’s just how things are. He’s a businessman through and through. It’s part of the reason he had moved to Hoenn.

”We’ve been remodelling the branch that’s a couple of blocks away. I came to have a look at how it turned out.” Mars explains while watching the Lycanroc deal with a wild Lairon.

In the corner of his eye, he can see Dollar taking a step away, his attention being drawn towards a wild Electrike. Mars clicks his tongue, subtle as ever, and it’s all it takes for HIDDEN POWER to strike the electric canine.

Zev nodded along as Mars explained the reason for his presence in the Lower District, his expression mild and pleasant, as if this was yet another conversation he was having at the bar. Idly, he reached down and scratched Luna behind an ear when she returned to his side.[break][break]

The idea of a walk sounded good, especially since the Night Market was in full swing with plenty of interesting wares and street food to peruse. "Not at all," he replied.[break][break]

They proceeded at a leisurely stroll, their Pokémon at their sides. Zev finished his minced meat bao, but it was merely a snack, not enough to satiate his hunger. He kept an eye out for one of his favorite stalls, a place that sold fish cake skewers, with complimentary cups of soup to go with them.[break][break]

"So, from one businessman to another, got any good advice for being successful for so long? Tips, secrets?" he asked Mars, mostly seeking to fill the air with idle conversation instead of actually getting advice. With his personal goal nearing completion, Zev saw little reason to remain a bar owner for much longer. Howling at the Moon would close and he would go back home to Kanto.[break][break]

Ahead of the pair, a Skarmory alighted upon the ground, seeking easy food. Zev whistled sharply, and Luna raced forward, lunging for the giant bird. A quick CRUNCH brought her crashing to the ground. Zev tossed a Poké Ball as they neared.

”Business tips, huh?” Mars smiles as they walk, recognizing idle chatter for what it is. He doesn’t really mind it; streets like these are no place for serious conversation, and he actually quite enjoys talking about business – it reminds him of the times he’s been asked to be a guest lecturer.

”Understand what your customers want and how that might change, adapt to the times, and make your business a place where they can find something they won’t find anywhere else.” It sounds simpler than what it is, he knows that. His gaze wanders over to the food stalls, and even though the Persian seems curious about all the delicious smells nearby, it stays by his side.

”Those are the more exciting parts, but the reality of it is that any business can persist for long if you make cautious and smart financial decisions.” Mars shrugs down.

Before opening Howling at the Moon, Zev had spent the previous year doing rigorous research on business and economics. He had read a dozen autobiographies or biographies of the most successful CEOs across the world, including Rita Garnet, FERNANDO SILPH, Édouard Bortiforte, Dmitri and Evelina Wells in Galar, and even Martín del Mar himself. Zev knew the basic principles that Mars described.[break][break]

In an industry as swollen with businesses as restaurant and hospitality, finding and claiming a niche had been incredibly difficult. Many attempts made by others failed regularly. Howling's blend of Unovan style (for the locals) and local Hoennian cuisine (for the tourists), plus top quality drinks, had allowed it to take root and proliferate.[break][break]

"The way you say it, it almost sounds like we have to be Psychic-type Pokémon in order to be successful," Zev joked, reusing one a patron had told him months ago. "And the changing times can be harsh. You're popular one minute, forgotten the next. Your book said something about that, though, didn't it?"[break][break]

As he spoke, the ugliest Pokémon he'd ever seen waddled into view, looking this way and that as if confused by the noise. Luna pounced immediately, subduing it with ROCK TOMB. Zev threw a Poké Ball to capture it.

”Psychic type Pokémon are my specialty for a reason.” He too is joking, as is made clear in the way he smirks. There is a very good reason as to why Psychic type Pokémon are one of his two training specialties, and it has little to do with business. Then again, Zev is also right with his comment.

Dollar seems to spot something that draws his attention, and for now, Mars lets him go to check it out, knowing the Persian will return to his side without a problem. He’s more preoccupied with mention of his book anyway.

”You read my biography?” Many people had told him as much before too, but Mars had had that book written when he first moved to Hoenn for the sake of giving more ground to his cover. Martín del Mar, a businessman from Kalos who has worked hard to be as successful as he is now. There’s as many truths in it as there are lies; otherwise it would not make for a convincing tool of deception.

”It’s hard in the hospitality industry, I don’t envy you. Then again, I bet people will have plenty of reasons to go to bars to celebrate when all this is over.”

Just as Mars says this, the Persian returns, carrying in his maw Honedge by its hilt. As if he were wielding a sword. Mars chuckles at the sight, amused, and the best part of all is that the spectral sword doesn’t seem to mind it at all.

”Oh, Dollar, what will people think of me if you go around wielding weapons, hm?” He scratches behind the cat’s ears.

"I did," Zev confirmed as they finally approached the stall that sold fish cake skewers and the little cups of hot soup. "Twice, actually. You had a lot of interesting things to say about business and how to approach the future. I was really inspired."[break][break]

An exaggeration. Zev had extracted what helpful wisdom written in the pages of the biography and integrated it with the rest of what he'd learned. But there was no harm in the occasional flattery, especially since their conversation was all irrelevant, anyway.[break][break]

Zev paid for three skewers in a little paper tray and a cup of soup. He looked down at his Lycanroc just as she started stalking away toward a Dedenne nibbling on discarded food scraps. Whistling sharply, he caught Luna's attention and waved a skewer at her. She bounded over to his side and accepted the offering with a wagging tail.[break][break]

"Hospitality has its challenges, it's true," Zev replied to Mars' musings before taking a sip of soup, relishing the umami flavor on his tongue. "But you're right. People will drink for just about any reason — when the world is about to end, and when we survive it all afterward. You're welcome to celebrate with all the rest at Howling, you know."[break][break]

Zev grinned.

Although, admittedly, if he truly were to want to sit down and give Zev Harcourt business advice, he could do so with ease. It’s what he is, isn’t it? A few proudly framed degrees in business and economics, years of experience in the field, and beyond all that, the simple fact that it’s what he loves doing.

Yet a man can love a great variety of things, and talking business is not what he’s in the mood to do at this moment. Eating some great street food, though? Why the hell not? He buys himself a couple of skewers, and when a curious Helioptile approaches, drawn closer by the delightful aroma, Dollar growls softly at it, using HYPNOSIS to put it to sleep. A Luxury Ball deals with the aftermath of this action, and another takes the Honedge too.
